Noir, a world premiere musical by Duncan Sheik and Kyle Jarrow, opened Thursday as the 75th season finale for the Alley Theatre. From the Tony Award-winning creative team to the talented cast, many of which have starred in or originated roles on Broadway, the Alley took no shortcuts when it came to producing this new work. I was fortunate enough to attend opening night and there are three weeks of the run remaining so you can also catch a performance of this great new show. Whether you’ve been lucky enough to see a Duncan Sheik musical in the past or not, don’t miss this opportunity to see his newest groundbreaking work while it is in Houston. The Hobby Center welcomed the national tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical to Houston for a limited 3-day run this weekend, treating audiences to all of their favorite Carole King songs (and more) while telling the story of the famed singer’s rise to fame. As someone who came to the show with familiarity of her work, I still learned many things about King’s life and heard songs I never knew were written by her.

On one blisteringly hot afternoon in Austin, Texas on my fifth day at SXSW, I had the absolute honor and pleasure of getting maximally groovy to the waves of Jerry Paper, the musical persona of Lucas Nathan, who officially wins the award for both (1) Best Dressed and (2) Best Dances Moves of any performer of the week. The performance left me absolutely drenched in sweat from half an hour of childlike dance-mania; Jerry Paper absolutely succeeded in their intentions per the SXSW website: “They want you to PLAY around and have some friggin’ fun for once!”

One of the most surprising parts about SXSW was the heavy presence of British musicians and bands! We got to catch up with one of them, Alex Stephens, also known as Strawberry Guy, a moniker he earned for identifying most heavily with strawberry as both a jam donut and milkshake flavor. Alex was an exceedingly jovial interviewee, kindly playing along to my conversational antics such as asking him the color he felt like (yellow!) or if he liked to play games (chess, Animal Crossing). He performed at Cedar Street Courtyard, my favorite venue of the week, between brick buildings in the sweet light of the afternoon, which perfectly accompanied his dream-pop-esque sound.

Without a doubt, my personal favorite performance of the entire week of South by Southwest came from someone whose music I’ve been listening to since I was a toddler: Darden Smith. While it’s been two decades, the man and his voice have aged like fine wine, only growing more expressive and singular with time. His 2003 release Sunflower is a true treasure, and my only lamentation about his performance is that I didn’t get to hear more of that album! However, I certainly wasn’t disappointed with what I did get to hear: his newest album, Western Skies, which he wrote over the course of the pandemic and released just this spring.

For those unfamiliar, SXSW is an annual conference focusing on music, film, and tech that takes over downtown Austin every year– or rather almost every year. SXSW was canceled in 2020 and online in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and 2022 was the year the conference made its grand return.
The excitement of the event’s return was palpable on the streets. Posters for SXSW events (or in search of Nick Cage) were everywhere downtown, and everywhere you looked, brands were promoting themselves and bands were rocking. There was just so much happening, and everyone on the streets ran from one event to the next.

Once I arrived at Oblivion Access on Saturday morning, I made my way to Native Hostel to check out the art and merch on display. From the fest’s own psychedelic-hued merch to a Polyvinyl pop-up shop, to local artists such as Decadent West, the jewelry shop Desired Objects, and the custom embroiderer Rodeo Rainbows, the goods on display were a vibrant and well-curated introduction to the festival’s unique energy. Talking to the artist behind Desired Objects, they explained that they’d taught themself the art of creating chainmail via online tutorials during lockdown; similarly, OA co-founder Dusty Brooks told me that the fest’s team had discovered new artists to add to the lineup via YouTube recommendations. I felt that the vendor aspect of OA epitomized the fest’s anything-goes, DIY attitude- plus I was able to make sure that I was dressed to impress when I headed out to the shows!

I arrived early to the sold out Car Seat Headrest concert last Thursday, May 5th, the neon sign of White Oak Music Hall like a beacon through fog and the beginnings of light rain. However, I certainly wasn’t the earliest, as the band had attracted a line as far as six hours in advance, including a pair that had followed the band from San Diego to Los Angeles to Austin to Houston. Hearing the story of this mother-son duo only made me all the more excited to see this cult-captivating band play live, eager to learn what so clearly enraptured over a million Spotify listeners, a number that grows by the day.

The Avett Brothers are a group that I have enjoyed listening to for the past couple of years, since my mother saw them at Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival and told me to check them out when I was in high school. They have a folk/Americana styling that melds with rock sensibilities to create a unique sound that can be equal parts raucous and tender. I’d recommend them to anyone who likes artists such as The Band, The Lumineers, and Fleet Foxes.
